Budhaditya Mukherjee
Budhaditya Mukherjee hails as India's leading
sitarist of younger generation, today. As a young lad of five,
Budhaditya began his grooming under his illustrious father Pandit
Bimlendu Mukherjee, a doyen of the famous Imdadkhani gharana of
sitar. Since then, under his father's brilliant guidance,
Budhaditya has developed impeccable mastery of the instrument.
Budhaditya specializes in disciplined development of raags, based
on the gayaki style, the basis of Imdadkhani gharana. His
technical virtuosity is outstanding, and the feelings and
emotions he expresses through his music are simply brilliant.
Though a first class first graduate in Metallurgical Engineering,
he opted for sitar as career due to his intense desire for
mastering the art.
He has received numerous awards and honors in India and abroad,
and has been privileged to represent the nation in eight
international festivals, amongst his 441 concerts in nineteen
countries. His concerts within India numbering to almost 700,
featuring almost all major festivals of India, have been widely
acclaimed. On June 30, 1990 Budhaditya created history by
becoming the first ever musician to perform in the House of
Commons, London. He has also been a teacher at the prestigious
Instituto Internazionale di studi Musciali Comparati, San
Giorgio, Venice, as well as the famous Rotterdams Conservatory of
Music, Rotterdam, Holland.
